Lunenburg Case Study

The Lunenburg Municipality is the third largest rural municipality in Nova Scotia, covering a geographic area of over 432,000 acres. The District is home to a growing population of over 26,000 and is considered one of the hot spots for development and growth in Nova Scotia. The majority of the communities are seaside, located along coves and beaches. The District prides itself on its protection of the environment and has one of its many beaches (Kingsburg Beach) designated a protected beach under the Beaches Act.

Lunenburg County was chosen for one of the Coastal Decision Support System's Case Studies because of its wide variety of beach types, dunes and its seasonal flooding hazards. Some of the coastlines being examined in the case study are also susceptible to erosion and/or accretion. This case study was undertaken by Applied Geomatics Research Group in cooperation with GeoNet Technologies Inc., the College of Geographic Sciences, Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, and the Kingsburg Coastal Conservancy.
